So, You Want to Interview . . .

  1. Before the interview takes place, do your homework

    1. Check your answering machine message. Is the message professional / appropriate to receive calls from a potential employer? When you answer the phone directly, is your response professional?

    2. Research the potential employer. Learn about the products they make, their philosophies and culture, and other aspects of the company that would assist in adequately preparing you for the interview.

  2. Prior to the interview, think through some questions that could potentially be asked, and carefully consider how you will respond.

  3. Be on time for your interview. To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late can leave a disastrous first impression.

  4. Dress appropriately, modestly, and professionally. Ask the recruiter what the appropriate attire would be from the perspective of the potential employer.

  5. Listen attentively to questions.

  6. Do not dodge questions, but do your best to give direct, concise answers.

  7. If you do not understand the question, ask for clarification.

  8. Make eye contact with your interviewers so they know you are paying attention.

  9. When given the opportunity to ask questions, make sure to ask intelligent, well-prepared questions that pertain to the position. Your interviewers will see that you are confident and thoughtful, and you will gain more knowledge about your potential position at the same time.

  10. The interviewers want to get to know you so they can decide how you would fit with their company. Try to relax and just be yourself!
